With the combination of oxygen, nitrogen, clouds containing water, and even a little pollution, people can see the splendid colors of a sunset. But, besides all the chemistry jargon, the most important aspect of a sunset is where to view it. One of my favorite spots is Crown Point State Park: Vista House (above) located just east of Portland on I-84. Traveling up the old highway to get there is a treat in itself. Another spot closer to town is Spencer’s Butte (left). Situated just outside of town on Willamette Street, the hike up the mountain is great while racing friends, and the reward at the top is well worth it; just remember to bring a sweater. And finally we have the coast (below). With miles and miles of beach within reach of Eugene, there are enough choices for a school year’s worth of exploring. Just head out West 11th Avenue until you hit the ocean, then decide whether to head north or south.
