The Oregon tennis teams continued their fall preseason schedule with success in both singles and doubles matches over the
weekend.
The Oregon women compiled a winning singles record after finishing up play at the Jack Taylor Indoor Classic in Boise, Idaho on Sunday. The Ducks ended with
a combined 12-8 singles record among the five players who
participated.
Senior Davina Mendiburu had the most impressive showing for the Ducks after earning a 4-0 record in singles. In her fourth win, Mendiburu came back after losing the first set to defeat Boise State’s Alissa Ayling in a tough, three-set match, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4.
In her first three singles victories, Mendiburu was victorious against three Brigham Young players. On the first day of the tournament Friday, Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander praised Mendiburu after her wins against BYU’s Hadley Macfarlane in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3 and BYU’s Olga Boulytcheva in three sets, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3.
“I was especially pleased with the play of Davina,” Schyllander said. “She stepped up like a senior should.”
For the other Ducks, junior Jamie Marshall came up with three singles wins, while junior Anna Leksinska and sophomore Monica Hoz De Vila each had two.
Sophomore Ester Bak earned her lone win on Sunday against Boise State’s Stacey Housley, 6-2 and 6-2.
On the doubles side, Bak and Mendiburu teamed up to win two matches. The Oregon duo defeated Boise State’s Ayling and Nadja Woschek 8-6 for the Ducks’ only doubles victory on Sunday. They also cruised past BYU’s Lauren Jones and Dolly Chang, 8-6.
Schyllander said he was impressed with his team’s singles and doubles play and the consistency they showed throughout the tournament.
“I am really pleased with the way things went,” Schyllander said. “We had our ups and downs, but it was a good showing for the first tourney of the year.”
The Oregon women will take two weeks off before heading to the Wilson regional tournament in Palo Alto, Calif., beginning Oct. 22.
Pino makes Flight B quarterfinals
Oregon freshman Christopher Liao and sophomore Eric Pickard won two of their three doubles matches at the Bronco Classic tournament
in Santa Clara, Calif., during the
weekend.
In the Flight B semifinals, Liao and Pickard were edged out by Linas Cicenas and Carlos Malet of Loyola Marymount, 6-3 (retired).
In singles, Liao won his first-ever collegiate match at Oregon after upending Nevada’s Max Volger in straight sets, 6-1 and 7-6 in the Flight C Singles first round. Liao, a native of Taipei, Taiwan, then lost his next two singles matches to finish with a 1-2 record.
Sophomore Vladimir Pino also had a good showing for the Ducks after making it to the Flight B quarterfinals. Pino won his first and second round matches to Jayce Fitch of UC Davis and Rafael Stupka of Nevada, respectively, in straight sets.
However, in the quarterfinals Pino had a chance to advance to the semifinals but lost in three sets to Anders Dalskov of UC Santa Barbara, 5-7, 6-4 and 2-6.
The Oregon men will continue action in two weeks when they will participate in the five-day ITA Fall Regional tournament in Berkeley, Calif., beginning Oct. 22.
