Michael Moore brings
voting tour to Eugene
Political filmmaker and author Michael Moore will urge people to vote for
presidential candidate John Kerry at noon today when he brings his controversial “Slacker Uprising Tour” to the Lane County Events Center.
Moore will deliver a monologue and read letters he has received from soldiers in Iraq at the show, which is sponsored by the UO Cultural Forum.
Moore’s shows often include surprise guests and interaction with the audience.
In an event press release, Moore said the tour is designed to spur people who might not vote into action. His goal is to see more than 56 percent of the voting public vote in this election, something that has not occurred since 1968, according to the release.
“It is not the wealthy and the elite who don’t vote,” Moore said. “The non-voters are the poor, the disenfranchised, the single moms and young people. I am calling for a non-voter uprising, led by thousands of campus slackers who proudly sleep ’til noon and who believe papers are for rolling, not
reading.
“They are rightfully cynical, but this year their motto will be: ‘Bush and Kerry both suck — that’s why I’m voting for John Kerry,’” Moore said.
Catherine Matthys, contemporary issues coordinator for the Cultural Forum, said she was thrilled that people will hear Moore’s message as the
Nov. 2 election nears.
“During one of the most politically charged elections of the century, it’s crucial for cultural icons like Michael Moore to become involved with encouraging young people to vote,” Matthys said.
Shuttles will run to the event from 12th Avenue and Kincaid Street
every 10 minutes, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., according
to www.michaelmoore.com. Immediately after the event, shuttles will
depart from 13th Avenue and
Monroe Street.
Tickets cost $5 and are available through the University Ticket Office in the EMU.
The Cultural Forum is a student group that offers a variety of events in music, fine art, performing arts, film and contemporary issues throughout the year.
