After being knocked out of bounds in the UCLA game on Sunday, freshman point guard Aaron Brooks sustained a fractured right wrist and will miss six to eight weeks.
X-rays and a CT scan performed Monday showed that Brooks fractured his high right hamate bone and will need to undergo surgery this week. Brooks only played six minutes against UCLA before the injury and did not return to the game.
Brooks, who has started all nine games for Oregon at the point guard position, was averaging 6.7 points and 2.9 assists per game. Sophomore Brandon Lincoln and senior James Davis are expected to fill the void.
The UCLA loss was the team’s first in Pacific-10 Conference play. Here is a recap of Oregon’s games during winter break:
Kansas 77, Oregon 67
It was by far Oregon’s most difficult matchup this season as the Ducks headed to Kansas City to face then-No. 5 Kansas.
After Oregon defeated the Jayhawks in the 2002 Papé Jam, junior Wayne Simien and the rest of the Kansas team were not to be outdone again, posting a 77-67 victory.
Simien, who missed 22 games last season due to a dislocated shoulder, shined in his return to Kemper Arena with 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.
After falling behind early, Oregon went on an 11-0 run in the second half to trim Kansas’ lead to 49-47. The Jayhawks would not be denied, however, and with less than seven minutes to go they had the lead back to 68-52 before taking the game.
“Kansas did a good job using the emotion of the crowd,” Oregon head coach Ernie Kent said after the game.
Oregon 94, Santa Clara 71
The Ducks upped their nonconference winning streak at McArthur Court to 24 by blowing out the Broncos.
Senior Luke Jackson led Oregon with 23 points, and Oregon’s total of 94 was the most the Broncos have allowed all season.
Jackson’s 15 second-half points helped Oregon to the 23-point win after the Ducks were leading by only four at the half. Senior Jay Anderson, who started in place of an injured Mitch Platt, had a career-high 11 points.
Santa Clara’s drought in the second half, during which it scored only one field goal in 7:25 of play, allowed Oregon to seal the deal.
Alabama 87, Oregon 86
Alabama’s Kennedy Winston proved to be too much for the Ducks at the Las Vegas Showdown.
Winston’s jumper with 4.5 seconds left lifted the Crimson Tide to the 1-point victory. Jackson’s running shot at the buzzer rimmed out, resulting in heartbreak for an Oregon team that knew it let one get away.
Oregon led 86-83 with one minute left after an Andre Joseph three-pointer. Alabama’s Chuck Davis dunked on the next possession and Oregon couldn’t convert.
The Ducks converted on all six three-pointers in the second half and forward Ian Crosswhite led Oregon with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Oregon 88, Portland 70
Oregon’s three-point heroics began at the Chiles Center. The Ducks had 15 from the beyond the arc while shooting an astounding 71 percent from the three-point line.
Jackson had three from downtown, helping him to his 19-point total. Joseph also had three from the three-point line and Davis converted five for 18 points.
The loss was a bit of revenge for Oregon, which suffered a surprising loss at Portland two years ago.
“Losing here two years ago might have been the worst loss I can remember since I’ve been here at Oregon,” Jackson said. “I wanted this win so bad for everybody who was on that team.”
Oregon 92, USC 74
The Ducks continued their long-range shooting tactics in their Pac-10 opener against the Trojans, winning easily.
