Remember when you were in elementary school and arts and crafts were already built into your schedule? Or when you could choose an art class as an elective in middle school and take it for free without buying a bunch of costly materials?
As an adult, doing art just for fun is much more difficult. Usually, it includes committing to a class, purchasing expensive materials and dedicating more time than you’d like for a simple hobby.
Despite all this, low-cost and beginner-friendly options for creating art are available—you just have to search them out. To make it easy, here’s a list of ways to get in touch with your artistic side that require little commitment and won’t break the bank.
Peace Love & Pottery
Located at 584 Olive St. near the Hult Center, Peace Love & Pottery allows you to pick out pottery and use its materials and facility to paint it. All you have to do is pay for the pottery itself. A wide range of ceramic items are available, but common items like mugs and bowls are $14-$20 each. No reservation is needed and open hours are listed on its Facebook page.
MECCA Studio
MECCA (Materials Exchange Center for Community Arts) is a non-profit organization that allows free community use of its studio during open hours. With a suggested donation of $2-$5, visitors are also welcome to use any of the tools, books, machines and other materials in the studio. Even better, MECCA is home to a low-cost art supply store where students can buy donated, recycled and used supplies.
River Road Park & Recreation District Adult Classes
The River Road Park & Recreation District offers applied arts classes that are once a week, around seven weeks long each, and cost anywhere between $30-$90. Materials are often included in this fee. Additionally, you can try out any of these classes for a day for just $10 to see if it’s something you’re interested in long-term.
