Senior Katie Swoboda is Oregon’s all-time leader in digs, and fourth on the Pac-10 career list. She leads No. 7 Oregon into a match-up this weekend with No. 24 Oregon State.
Oregon Daily Emerald: What are you majoring in?
Katie Swoboda: I’m a history major.
ODE: What’s the worst class you’ve ever taken?
KS: I used to be in journalism, and I took Info Hell. It was definitely a challenging class, not the greatest. But once you were done it was a great feeling.
ODE: This is your senior year. What goals have you set?
KS: We want to improve on last year. We want to build on what we did in the tournament last year. We are just striving to do that.
ODE: What do you do the day of a match?
KS: Actually, I don’t have too many rituals. I listen to “I Believe” by Yolanda Adams everyday with Rachel (Morris), and I don’t have class on Fridays so usually I go to the Original Pancake House in the morning.
ODE: What’s a practice like?
KS: I love practices. Coach (Jim) Moore tries to keep competition going through the entire practice instead of just routine free ball, so I love how they make everything competitive. It’s really fun.
ODE: Favorite moment in volleyball?
KS: Making it to the Sweet 16 last year. Just rebuilding this program has been such a fun ride and a good experience. We’ve worked really hard to get here, and it’s raised expectations.
ODE: Coach Moore says you “dig everything under the sun.” What’s your mindset when you’re on the court?
KS: I just tell myself that I have to get every ball. It’s kind of a “no fear” attitude. I’ll do whatever it takes to get that ball up. That’s my job.
