While we provide witty commentary, keep in mind that the opinion desk is also keeping up with daily news. That being said, the new ‘Columnists React’ forum allows our columnists to tell you what they think about current news issues with the hopes that you’ll retort right back.
Anastasia Strgar: “I try to avoid walking alone at night, and I’d rather walk than risk getting a bike stolen. But for the most part I feel safe living on campus and in Eugene in general.”
Meredith LaFrance: “At night I avoid walking in unlit areas; however, I feel fairly safe otherwise, especially now that I know tae kwon do.”
Alex Conley: “For the most part, yes [I feel safe]. I wouldn’t leave my bike around unlocked, but I don’t fear for my life every time I step outside.”
Truman Capps: “I’ve never felt unsafe in a community full of hippies.”
Natasha Martin: “In general, I feel pretty safe in Eugene. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to get drunk and walk home alone or anything, but I do feel secure despite reports claiming potential danger.”
Quinn Moticka: “Like in every larger city, I feel wary of walking alone at night and making sure my bike is locked.”
Matt Petryni: “I do think Eugene suffers from an urban animosity and belligerence that’s sometimes quite unhealthy.”
