Oregon senior Malik Hairston is being considered for the John R. Wooden Award, given to the nation’s top college basketball player. The midseason list was narrowed to 30 players yesterday, though players not currently on the list are able to win the award at season’s end.
Hairston leads the Ducks with 18.2 points per game and has converted 55.5 percent of his shot attempts, including 49.4 percent from three-point range. He also averages 4.7 rebounds per game and leads the team with 17 blocks.
He is one of seven members from the Pacific-10 Conference to be named, which was the most in any league.
The other Pac-10 players are Arizona’s Chase Budinger, Arizona State’s James Harden, USC’s O.J. Mayo, UCLA’s Kevin Love, Washington’s Jon Brockman and Washington State’s Derrick Low.
Last year, Oregon guard Aaron Brooks was one of 10 players named to Wooden’s All-American team at the end of the season.
