The Oregon women’s basketball team ran out of energy in the wrong place to lose steam.
No. 7 Stanford walloped Oregon 83-49 Saturday inside Maples Pavilion and sent the Ducks home to Eugene looking ahead to home games with the Washington schools.
Oregon poured all the energy it had into its Thursday evening game against California in a slim 61-52 defeat.
Already sporting bumps and bruises, the Ducks fell behind 24-6 Saturday and Stanford never looked back, widening the advantage to 33-12 and leading 38-22 at halftime.
Oregon pulled within 14, 40-26, early in the second half on a three-pointer by Micaela Cocks and a free throw by Victoria Kenyon, but Stanford went back on the attack. The Cardinal scored the next seven points, including a three-pointer from Rosalyn Gold-Onwude and free throws by Jillian Harmon, as they moved ahead 47-26.
The rout was on from there.
Stanford stretched the lead to 30, 62-32, on a three-pointer by Jeanette Pohlen.
Ellie Manou marked the only Duck in double figure scoring with 10 points. Cocks and Kenyon each had seven.
Oregon made just 18 of 49 shots for a 36.7 percent clip and made 2 of 10 three-pointers.
The more startling statistic might have been the zero next to Taylor Lilley’s name on the stat sheet. Oregon’s leading scorer at 12.4 a game, Taylor had no field goals and only two points on free throws. She had 15 points the game before against Cal.
Stanford’s do-it-all guard Candice Wiggins had a game-high 20 points despite an 8 of 20 night from the field. She made just 1 of 7 shots from three-point range in becoming one of three Cardinal in double-figures.
Harmon and Pohlen each had 15 points. The pair combined for a sterling 12 of 16 shooting performance. Harmon, a native of Lake Oswego, had a team-high nine rebounds.
Oregon saw its overall record even out at 8-8 and are 2 and 3 in the Pacific-10 Conference. Stanford improved to 14-3 and 4-2 in conference play.
The extended garbage time gave Oregon a chance to utilize all of its bench and give Tatianna Thomas and Nicole Canepa extended minutes.
Thomas had four points, five rebounds and three steals. Canepa, working her way back into the rotation after suffering a sprained ankle in December, played 16 minutes and had four points and two rebounds.
The loss continued Oregon’s 21-year stretch without a win inside Maples Pavilion. The Ducks were hurt by equaling a season-high in turnovers with 27 and by allowing 83 points – the most Oregon has allowed this season.
