When you go for almost two months without a win, frustration can mount.
After 11 straight losses on the road, the Oregon women’s tennis team got downright angry. The Ducks took their built-up frustration out against 3-12 Pacific on Sunday, routing the Tigers 6-1.
“I’m very pleased with the effort today,” Oregon women’s coach Jack Griffin said. “They are still fighting, digging and believing that tomorrow is going to be a better day. It’s nice to get a team victory. This will help us going into a long road trip.”
Junior Jeannatte Mattsson led five Ducks to singles victories, giving up no points to Pacific’s Melinda Koscis in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Freshman Courtney Nagle was nearly perfect, defeating the Tigers’ Sandja Zarina 6-0, 6-1.
The Ducks got the match off to a good start with an impressive showing in doubles. In three matches, Oregon gave up only four points.
The women take a two-week break before traveling to Tulsa on Friday, March 13.
Road trip no vacation for men
There was no fun in the sun for the Oregon men’s tennis team this spring break. The Ducks’ road trip began like most vacations, with trips to sunnier parts of the country, but ended with three devastating losses.
“It was kind of disappointing,” Oregon men’s coach Chris Russell said. “We took a step back, we just didn’t compete as well as we need to nor did we play as well as we need to.”
The Ducks concluded their non-conference schedule with three losses, falling to 8-9 on the season.
Oregon’s loss Tuesday, March 27, to No. 13-ranked South Alabama kicked off the road trip in Mobile, Alabama. The 19-2 Jaguars gave no sets in the dominating 7-0 win.
Two days later, the Ducks dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 19 Fresno State on the same courts. Freshmen Martin Pawlowski and Greg Dubordieu picked up Oregon’s lone wins.
The road swing ended with the closest match of the week, a 4-3 loss at Louisiana in Lafayette, La. on Saturday. The Rajin’ Cajuns capitalized with wins in the doubles and top three singles matches.
Dubordieu ended the weekend 2-1 in singles, while the doubles team of Oded Teig and Chris King won twice.
The Ducks continue their road swing with Pac-10 matches in Arizona this weekend.
