How/Why do you want to change the world?
I want to better the lives of individuals in the criminal justice system and, in particular, the prison system. Incarcerated people are neglected, demonized, and exploited by our deeply broken retributive justice system, and establishing a restorative system in its place will take dedication at all levels. I hope to contribute on the individual level as a prison psychologist, working to rehabilitate inmates and be a source of humanity within an inhumane system.
What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?
While I’m proud of everything I was involved with at the UO, the Inside Out course I took through the Prison Education Program is the most special to me. Having the opportunity to learn alongside, and from, inmates during this course was transformative in a way I never could have predicted. This experience ignited my passion for restorative justice and my desire to help the people in our prison system.
Who is your biggest role model and why?
I don‚‘t think it’s possible for me to single out one person as my biggest role model, as I’ve needed different role models at different times. I’ve been incredibly lucky to know many strong, passionate people who have inspired me throughout my life, and I look forward to meeting many more in the future.
What are your goals after college?
My ultimate goal after college is working as a prison psychologist and doing my part to improve the lives and treatment of the people in our prison system. However, my immediate goal is taking some time off to travel and prepare myself for the many years of graduate school necessary to reach that final goal.
Which fictional character is most like yourself?
I would like to think I‘m most like Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender. While I had no way of knowing at the time, Katara was exactly the type of strong female character I needed during my childhood. Seeing a woman who didn‚‘t need to sacrifice her emotions to be powerful was revolutionary for me, and I still connect with her unwavering desire to fight for the causes and people she believes in.
