The Oregon Ducks men’s golf team finished in eighth place at 4-under par in the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii. The event was the first tournament of the spring season for the Ducks.
Oklahoma State (-47) won the three-day tournament and the USC Trojans (-27) were the highest finishing Pac-12 team.
After posting back-to-back rounds of 4-under, freshman Donald Kay shot one under on Saturday to end with a team-best 9-under par, earning him a ninth-place finish.
Sophomore Norman Xiong finished 5-under par after shooting 2-under on the final day. However, he opened the event with a 5-over par on Thursday, finishing last among Oregon’s starting lineup.
He bounced back by putting together one of his best performances as a Duck in round two. He made six birdies and an eagle to help tie his career-low score with 8-under. His score was the lowest score of any golfer at the tournament during the second round.
The team finished tied for fifth entering the final day of the tournament before falling back in the standings.
Junior Edwin Yi shot an even-par on Friday and Saturday to finish 1-under par in the tournament. His was just one of two Ducks to finish 1-under par, ending with an opening round 1-under and finish with the third-best Oregon score from the weekend.
Junior Ryan Gronlund shot 1-under in the final round to put him at 1-over par overall. He birdied four times but was hindered by a double bogey on the seventh hole and a bogey on hole 15.
Freshman Thomas Mulligan posted a career-low 1-over in the opening round but struggled through the second round and third rounds. He shot 4-over par on Friday and ended the event 7-over par overall to round out the team’s starting-five lineup.
Sophomores Teddy Oitzman (+17) and Roberto Lebrija (+18) were golfing as individuals and their scores did not contribute to Oregon’s place in the standings.
The Prestige is the next tournament for the Ducks, which will take place in La Quinta, California. The three-day event tees off on Feb. 19.
