Matchups and stack-ups in the 2018 Civil War.
Oregon State Offense: The Beavers’ offense has had mixed results throughout the season. At times, the team has had a solid running game. Freshman running back Jermar Jefferson is the team’s best option on offense. He is second in the Pac-12 in terms of rushing yards with 1,316. Jefferson, the eighth Oregon State player to break 1,000 yards in a season, is tied for most touchdowns in the conference this season with 12.
Oregon Defense: After allowing career highs from multiple running backs in previous games, the defense limited Arizona State’s effectiveness from its two star players on the ground and in the air. Whether it was pass breakups or sacking the quarterback on third down, Oregon’s defense made clutch plays down the stretch. But the Ducks haven’t been consistent against the run, and Jefferson could be a problem throughout the game.
Verdict: Oregon has a more talented defense, but it can’t rest against a running back such as Jefferson. The secondary stepped up last game, and if the Ducks can stop the run, the Beavers don’t have enough firepower to match Oregon.
Advantage: Oregon
Oregon Offense: Oregon has the second-highest scoring offense in the Pac-12 with 35.3 points per game. But the Ducks are 1-3 on the road this season, and the offense has looked stifled at times in hostile territory. The fact that Oregon only managed a field goal in the second half against ASU does not inspire confidence. CJ Verdell has been effective in the run game and had two scores last game.
Oregon State Defense: The scores in Oregon State’s schedule will say all you need to know about this defense. The Beavers give up a lot of points and yards, both on the ground and in the air. Oregon State is last in the Pac-12 in terms of rushing defense, giving up 271.8 yards per game. It also doesn’t sack the quarterback much, as it is last in the conference with 13 sacks and is among the worst teams in terms of defending the pass with only three picks on the season compared to Oregon’s 13.
Verdict: Oregon’s offense has been far from perfect this season, but it has too many weapons for Oregon State’s defense to handle. On paper, the only thing that should stop Oregon from winning this game is poor play in the second half.
Advantage: Oregon
