McDonald Theatre, Jan. 19
Although it’s one of the few concerts coming to Eugene this winter term, Slightly Stoopid’s appearance at the McDonald Theatre is sure to be a night to remember. The band, which describes their sound as an eclectic “fusion of folk, rock, reggae and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal and punk,” was founded by high school friends Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald. In 1995, while still in high school, Slightly Stoopid was signed to Skunk Records by Bradley Nowell of the band Sublime, and the two friends have been playing together since.@@http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slightly_Stoopid@@
At the McDonald the audience can look forward to a live performance of the band’s latest studio album “Top of the World,” released in August of 2012. This album has been their latest studio effort in almost four years since the release of “Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid” in 2008. In an interview with Rolling Stone, singer Miles Doughty attributed the lack of studio progress to the members’ blossoming family lives and busy tour schedule. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the new album is the prevalence of musical guest stars including G. Love, Don Carlos and Angelo Moore from Fishbone.@@http://newalbumreleases.net/48194/slightly-stoopid-top-of-the-world-2012/@@
In their seventeen years together the band has produced eight studio albums and toured internationally, their route including countries like Guam, Portugal, Japan and Australia. In addition, the band has collaborated with reggae icons such as Barrington Levy and shared the stage with groups like the Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, Damian Marley and Snoop Dogg. Slightly Stoopid has played at music festivals from Lollapalooza to Coachella and in September of 2012 appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to play the title track from their album “Top of the World.”
Slightly Stoopid just wrapped up their Unity Tour 2012 with the band 311, and will be bringing the “world’s biggest weed party” to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado to celebrate the state’s recent legalization of marijuana on April 20. Their stop in Eugene should be an intimate and comparatively mellow concert on the road in between.
The show is slated for 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
