Every week the Emerald sports staff brings you the top links to check out in the world of Oregon sports. On Monday, reporter Christopher Keizur dove into the world of College Football Playoffs to try and figure out who would win the upcoming Rose Bowl showdown between No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Florida State.
-First a look at how both teams got here. The Ducks shook off the one blemish on their resume by throttling Arizona 51-13 in the Pac-12 Championship game. Florida State also won, outlasting running Georgia Tech 37-35, while reinforcing the belief that head coach Jimbo Fisher made a pact with the devil to never again lose a football game.
-Now, everything is set for a monster showdown that promises to feature plenty of excitement. If you love fast offenses, high-flying receivers and lots of scoring — this game is for you. Both Fisher and Oregon helmsman Mark Helfrich took the time to talk with the media about the upcoming game.
Of course the real story here is the battle of the quarterbacks, with both teams sporting two of the best signal callers in the country:
-Florida State has Jameis Winston, last year’s freshman Heisman winner. Though off-field incidents and an influx of interceptions have darkened his shine this season, Winston looks to be peaking at the perfect time for the Seminoles. He is a big quarterback, listed at 6’4, 230 pounds. Winston has outstanding arm strength and accuracy to go along with a supernatural awareness in the pocket. He also has the ability to make plays with his feet. Against Georgia Tech Winston threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns, answering every question with a perfectly thrown ball.
-Oregon has Marcus Mariota, who many project as the front-runner for the Heisman this season. Mariota is one of the most efficient quarterbacks in College football history, sporting a 186.3 passer rating this season. He is accurate on his throws and rarely makes poor decisions in the pocket. He is also blazing fast, running an offense that allows him to read the defense and take off down the field on scrambles.
-Mariota added to his accolades on Monday, earning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
-Both are similar quarterbacks who will get a look at the next level. Here is one New York fan’s breakdown of the two as he dreams of a world without Geno Smith.
-Florida State does have one huge advantage over the Ducks that may tip the scales. His name is Frankie AKA Red Lightning, the greatest ball boy in football history. Check out his highlight reel.
-So mark the date and get ready for Oregon vs Florida State.
A couple of quick notes on other Oregon sports:
-Oregon men’s basketball lost to Ole Miss 79-73 over the weekend.
-Oregon women’s basketball had a better showing, completing the largest comeback in team history to defeat Navy.
