Less than two weeks after the conclusion of what the team considered a disappointing fall, women’s golf landed a major recruit for next season. Golfweek’s No. 13 ranked golfer in the class of 2015, Kathleen Scavo, committed to Oregon.
Hailing from Justin-Siena High School in Napa, California, Scavo brings to Eugene a resume that includes medals in the Division I and II 2014 Nor-Cal Championships. She was also one of 25 amateurs to compete in the U.S. Women’s Open and was the first girl in 46 years to capture the California Girl’s Junior Championship two years in a row in 2013 and 2014.
Scavo will enter the program hoping to join Caroline Inglis, Cathleen Santoso and Kelsey Ulep as one of the team’s major contributors. She will hope to replace the most prolific player in team history, Cassy Isagawa, who holds the first, second and third lowest single-season stroke averages in her first three seasons.
The newest golf recruit spoke about her decision to attend Oregon via e-mail:
Have you been able to meet your future teammates?
Yes. I was able to meet my future teammates this fall during my official visit. Cathleen Santoso was my official host, so we became fast friends, but I developed a great rapport with the entire team during my official visit.
The Ducks played at Stanford a few weeks ago near your hometown. Were you able to visit with Coach Scott or any of the players there?
Yes. I did attend the Stanford Intercollegiate tournament in October. I did not visit with any of the coaches or players since they were actively competing, but of course I was thrilled to have an opportunity to support my future teammates while they were playing locally.
Who on the team do you think you resemble the most?
I would not say that I resemble any player more than the other, but there are definitely commonalities in all our personalities and a shared passion for competing at a high level and winning.
What were the other colleges that you were choosing from?
There is no room for runner-ups. I prudently participated in the recruiting process and with the support of family I chose to play collegiate golf at the University of Oregon.
What gave Oregon the edge over other schools?
The University of Oregon is just a really good fit for me, both athletically and academically. Additionally, I feel a great sense of camaraderie with the players and coaches and that’s a hugely important intangible part.
You’ve said that playing in the Pac-12 Conference was a major factor in deciding to come to Oregon. Why do you believe that Oregon has a chance to compete at the top of the conference in the coming years?
Yes. I am excited to play in the prestigious Pac-12 Conference and join the nationally recognized athletic programs at Oregon. I believe in the talent and drive of my future teammates and the coaches. I am also confident that our team’s enthusiasm and passion even more top talent to join the Oregon Duck family in the coming years.
