The Ducks got back to their winning ways with a pair of victories over Pacific and Fresno State on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California.
One day after losing to No. 1 Florida, the No. 2 ranked Ducks defeated Pacific 9-7 before beating Fresno State 3-0 in a Cheridan Hawkins masterpiece.
Game 1: Oregon 9 – Pacific 7:
Lauren Lindvall led a very strong performance by the bottom of Oregon’s lineup with a career-high five RBI’s as the Ducks scored early and often in the win.
The scoring barrage didn’t begin until the second inning when the Ducks erupted for four runs on three hits.
After two walks and an error loaded the bases for the Ducks, Lindvall roped a bases-clearing double to right field for the early 3-0 lead. Nikki Udria came up next and doubled to left center to score Lindvall and give the Ducks a 4-0 lead.
Oregon tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning when Hailey Decker led off with a single and advanced to third on a Gwen Svekis double. Lindvall then grounded out second base, allowing Decker to score before Udria singled up the middle to score Svekis.
The Ducks scored their final two runs in the sixth inning when Jenna Lilley led off with a double and advanced to third on a Stevie Jo Knapp single. Sammie Puentes entered the game in place of Knapp and promptly stole second before a Svekis sacrifice fly advanced both runners up a base.
Lindvall picked up her fifth RBI of the game when she brought home Puentes with a single to make the score 9-4.
Back-to-back Oregon errors in the bottom of the sixth put two runners on before a three-run blast made the score 9-7 entering the seventh inning.
Hawkins came in to pitch for Oregon in the seventh and earned her fifth save of the season with a perfect inning.
Karissa Hovinga (7-1) got the start in the pitcher’s circle and threw 2.2 innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Jasmine Smithson-Willett came on in relief of Hovinga and threw 3.1 innings, giving up three runs (zero earned) on three hits with five strikeouts.
Game 2: Oregon 3 – Fresno State 0:
Hawkins was dominant early and often in leading the Ducks to their seventh shutout victory of the season. She threw a complete game 7.0 innings, surrendering no runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts. With the win, Hawkins is now 7-2 on the season with five saves.
Oregon struck first when Lilley reached first on an error and advanced to third on a Decker double. Danica Mercado singled up the middle in the next at bat to score Lilley.
Janelle Lindvall added Oregon’s only run in the sixth inning when she hit a solo blast over the left field wall.
The Ducks got their final run in the seventh inning when Lauren scored off a Janie Takeda single.
Oregon returns to action on Sunday when they face Iowa at 9 a.m. and Long Beach State at 11:30 a.m. in its final games of the Judi Garman Classic.
