The Ducks’ 2015 record-breaking season is over.
Oregon fell 2-1 to Alabama in Oklahoma City in an elimination game, sending the Ducks into the offseason short of their goal of winning a national championship.
The Ducks — who rank No. 8 in the nation in scoring — found the scoreboard just twice in two games of the Women’s College World Series. They opened the tournament with a 7-1 loss to UCLA.
Oregon finishes the season with a 51-8 record and the program’s third consecutive Pac-12 title.
“I don’t know what it is,” head coach Mike White told reporters in OKC. “We were a very consistent team… But unfortunately we haven’t found a way to get over the hurdle here at the big one. That doesn’t mean we didn’t try. I’m very proud of our team.
Cheridan Hawkins took the loss, pitching six innings and giving up two earned runs. She struck out seven Tide batters and allowed three walks.
The Tide struck first against Hawkins. In the second inning, Hawkins issued a one out walk then Danielle Richard doubled off the right field wall. Hawkins struck out the next batter, but Alabama’s Chandler Dare singled to right field with two outs, scoring Richard and Danae Hays, giving Alabama an early 2-0 lead.
“I think I made a mistake and that ball just happened to land, it was unlucky,” Hawkins said of Dare’s bloop hit.
In the third, Lauren Lindvall drew a 3-2 walk and Danica Mercado laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lindvall to second. Janie Takeda knocked in Lindvall with a single over the second baseman to put Oregon on the board, 2-1.
“I think our players are amazing people and players,” Takeda said after her final game as a Duck. “I think they’ll just keep working. That’s what our team does. I think they’re going figure it out, hopefully next year. Hopefully the seniors left them with something to take with them.”
Alabama’s starter, Alexis Osorio, went the distance, pitching seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine Oregon batters.
“She’s definitely matured as a player,” Jenna Lilley said of Osorio. “Hats off to her. She did a nice job.”
In Oregon’s side of the fourth, Lilley got aboard on a walk and Hailey Decker moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Gerri Ann Glasco got aboard on a walk and Koral Costa was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A groundout ended the threat.
Takeda singled in the fifth, which was the final hit of the season for Oregon.
The loss means Oregon’s streak of 131 games without consecutive losses comes to an end.
The 2015 season saw the Ducks set school records in batting average, slugging, runs per game, doubles, home runs, walks, RBIs and total bases.
“We’re going to have to make it happen,” White said. “Right now, we’re just leaving our best game not in this environment. That’s what we’ve got to change.”
