A University of Oregon alumna died in a climbing accident over the weekend at Yosemite National Park, according to a UO professor.
The student, Angela Uys, 26, reportedly died while climbing Half Dome last Saturday. Uys was a 2014 graduate in biology and human physiology. No further details regarding the accident have been released.
UO professor Pat Lombardi said in a statement that Uys was “diversely talented and incredibly thoughtful, kind, polite and appreciative… Her view of life and love for living made a daily impact on us in the Biology Advising Center.” He also added that several of the staff had written Angela was their favorite student.
Before her death, Uys was taking additional course work at UC Berkeley to prepare for medical school. “We are certain that she would have become an outstanding, conscientous physician, and are disheartened that her tremendous potential was not realized,” Lombardi said.
An online obituary created for Uys states, “she was happiest helping others, feeding the poor and being in nature. Angela lived her life to the fullest, making each day count.”
A celebration of Uys’ life will be held Friday Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of the Hills in Los Gatos, California.
A memorial for students that are unable to attend is also being planned on campus.
Yosemite National Park said there was no official statement, and that the death was accidental and is under investigation.
