Six teams, five conferences.
Through seven weeks of the college football season, the race for the top spot in the Associated Press top-25 poll is as close as ever. Ohio State retains it’s No. 1 ranking but five other teams received first-place votes. Of those six teams receiving votes, they come from five different conferences as the Big-12 has two with Baylor and TCU both ranked in the top-five.
Memphis had the biggest jump of the week as it went from unranked to No. 18 in the country. The Tigers dismantled then-ranked No. 13 Ole Miss to stay 6-0 on the season. Stanford was the next biggest jump as the Cardinal, led by Heisman candidate Christian McCaffrey, jumped five spots to No. 10 after beating then-ranked No. 18 UCLA on Thursday night.
Memphis is one of three undefeated teams in the top-25 who hail from the American Athletic Conference. Houston at No. 22 and Temple at No. 23 join the Tigers as ranked teams from the AAC.
Conference breakdown starts with the SEC and its five ranked teams. The Big-10, Big-12 and ACC all have four teams while the Pac-12 has three.
