It’s been a busy summer for festivals in Eugene.
In the past month, we’ve seen the 46th Oregon Country Fair in Veneta and the Lane County Fair at the fairgrounds. Last week, downtown was shut down for vehicle traffic for Eugene Sunday Streets – an occasion designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind. And today, another iconic local fest is underway: the 9th Annual Whiteaker Block Party.
Plenty of students who leave Eugene for summer never get to see the Whiteaker neighborhood – often dubbed the city’s hippest locale – truly lighten up.
Several streets in the district are closed today and 11 stages are set up to showcase a variety of music, comedy, and other entertainment. Some stages are assembled in parking lots of businesses, others put up in the front lawns of Whiteaker natives. Sno-cone tents, ice cream and food trucks, booths from local clothing vendors and beer from Oakshire and Ninkasi (both Whit-based breweries), are also aplenty at the block party.
The volunteer-run event is free and will continue through 10 p.m. tonight. More info can be found on its website. Check out our photos below.
