In a competitive race, the Oregon Daily Emerald Board of Directors selected Design Editor Andy Rossback to be editor in chief for the 2012-13 school year, citing Rossback’s vision and experience as reasons for the selection.
“Andy has such a comprehensive grasp of the stakes facing journalism. He’s able to paint a picture of what it will look like to bridge the traditional print and new media,” Emerald Board Chair Melody Leslie said. “He has a very clear idea of how to move the Emerald forward in ways that will draw readership.”
Rossback began working at the Emerald last fall as a designer, where his skill and industry knowledge stood out. Rossback is eager to begin his new position and hopes to bring stories that strike the interests of the student body.
“This is an opportunity for me to share my vision with the University community, and it’s a very Oregon vision,” Rossback said.
Prior to working at the Emerald, Rossback was the editor in chief of his high school paper, the Marshfield Times. After that, he worked as the managing editor for Lane Community College’s student newspaper, The Torch, and completed reporting and photography internships at The Huntsville Times, in Huntsville, Ala., and The World in Coos Bay, Ore.
Though Rossback will be in Norfolk, Va., for a summer internship at The Virginian-Pilot, he will begin planning and training for his new role immediately. As editor of the Emerald, Rossback will be at the forefront of the Emerald’s continuing effort to restructure itself to answer the demands of the digital era.
“I’m excited to work with such a fantastic staff,” Rossback said. “My main goal is to make readers happy.”
