“This is, quite simply, an incredible opportunity, and an enormous challenge. The Field is an iconic Chicago institution with a global reach,” Lariviere wrote in a memo to his colleagues and friends. “The museum’s impact is unparalleled. It is a world leader in scientific research, engaging exhibitions and educational programming.”
Lariviere was given a unanimous “yes” from the museum’s executive committee on Friday, and museum Chairman John Rowe gave the board a strong recommendation of approval to hire him. @@http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-richard-lariviere-field-museum-head-20120417,0,3896476.column@@
He will take over duties as president from incumbent John McCarter who has run the museum since 1996. Lariviere said that his final day in Eugene will be June 21, as he will return for the month to finish work he and his wife Jan are currently undertaking for the University.
“We will miss being part of the UO community, but we look forward to being in Chicago and to the wonderful research and public service that the Field brings to the world,” Lariviere said. “The affection and support that we have felt from the UO community surpasses anything that we have known. It continues to move us deeply.”
