The ASUO Constitution Court overruled a decision made by the Elections Board regarding elections Wednesday.
The Elections Board decision stated that while Katie Taylor and Alex Sylvester will be removed from the ballot, their votes will go unallocated so they contribute to the total vote count. Constitution Court deemed this decision unconstitutional.
Their remedy was to entirely redo the primary elections for the Executive ticket. It will now include Ben Bowman and Lamar Wise, and Laura Hinman and Nick McCain@@http://asuovote2012.com/slates.html@@. The primary election will begin on Monday and unless one candidate receives 51 percent of the total vote, the general election will begin on Monday of week four.
Cimmeron Gillespie@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Cimmeron+Gillespie@@ decided not to run in the new primary elections. He is concerned students aren’t looking at the real role of the ASUO and making elections too political.
“The ASUO elections are obviously political and they are a mirror for U.S. politics,” he said. “Their @@…they’re@@job is to fund organizations and fund events. One campaign will do that more easily than the other one, but there are $13 million at stake.”
He stressed that people need to pay attention to the implications of the platform points on the year to come. Presidential candidate Laura Hinman agreed with the Constitution Court decision.
“While I don’t believe the student body deserves to be interrupted during week three, I respect the Con Court decision and believe it is fair,” Hinman said. “We are once again prepared for the general elections and hope the odds are ever in our favor.”
Presidential candidate Ben Bowman echoed Hinman’s feelings.
“I think Con Court made the right decision and I’m grateful to be running in a clean campaign,” he said.
Elections begin at 9 a.m. Monday.
