Brace yourselves, guys. There are some clothes that just don’t work. (I know the same can be said of girls’ fashion, but welcome to a style article all about you!) So what if it’s comfortable? Save it for lounging around the house. Below are five things girls hate and five things they love about guys’ fashion. What, you say you don’t care about fashion? Sorry, dude, you’re almost grown up. In the professional world (and the dating world) people care about things like this. Plus, I personally know guys who are more picky about their shoes than I am. So if you want to be seen in public with a girl, do yourself a favor and read these dos and don’ts.
Things girls hate:
1. Flip-flops
Unless you’re at the beach, save these shoes for another day. We know when the sun comes out in Eugene everyone goes a little crazy with the summer clothes. But flip-flops are a “no” for guys, sorry. If your feet really want some sun, wear sandals. Try Birkenstocks @@http://www.birkenstockusa.com/@@or something from Nike, and remember socks and sandals are never acceptable.
2. Deep V-neck T-shirts
Classy V-necks can be hot. But no one wants to see your man cleavage, even if your pecs are pumped. If showing off chest hair is your thing, stick to shirtless or baseball tees.
3. Sweats/hoodies
There are acceptable times to wear sweatpants and hoodies. But try not to make them the only thing you wear in public. Invest in a real jacket that says something about your style. Ever heard of the rap-hoops fashion continuum? As for working out, there are other things you can wear than b-ball shorts.
4. Baggy, low pants
We know you want your balls to breathe, but try not to wear a parachute. Super baggy pants are not flattering. And dude, we do not want to see your boxer-clad ass when you’re walking through campus. @@I had to walk behind a guy today whose entire butt was showing through his undies. ewwwwww!!!@@If you want to show off your ass to potential lady-friends, find a pair of jeans that fit right.
5. Short-sleeve, button-down shirts
You’re not on a tropical vacation. If it’s hot, wear a T-shirt. If you like the dress-shirt route, wear a normal one and roll up the sleeves. (Girls especially dig this look: There are few things hotter than guys with sexy forearms.)
Things girls love:
1. Flannel
We don’t know why, but most girls agree that flannel makes almost any guy ruggedly handsome. Flannel is warm, comes in a variety of cool colors and adds instant style to an outfit. It’s also pretty hard to screw up, so that’s a plus.
2. Sweaters or cardigans
A warm sweater is a nice alternative to a baggy hoodie in the winter. Now that it’s warmer out, cardigans are definitely in, and if you can pull it off it’s a major turn-on. Use some of your “hot nerd” or indie appeal by pairing a cardigan with a button-down shirt and fitting jeans.@@I actually wish I could pull this off. Props to Jonathan.@@
3. Color
Black, brown, grey and white look good on basically everyone. But add some color to your wardrobe, especially now that it’s finally spring. Does blue bring out your eyes? Does yellow deepen your tan? Can you pull off a pink shirt? @@Becky says noooooooooooo@@Colors are eye-catching and will draw in the ladies. (Ever heard of a peacock?) This spring, dusky pastels are in for both genders, so be on the lookout for some stylish new duds.
4. Smelling good
This might be less fashion and more something else, but it still bears mentioning. Girls notice if you smell good. And we remember it. You don’t need to create a cologne cloud like Tom Haverford of “Parks and Recreation.”@@http://www.goldderby.com/theater/news/1646/aziz-ansari-keeps-it-%27tommy-fresh%27-on-%27parks-and-recreation%27-%5Bvideo%5D.html@@ Just a bit of musky scent is enough to make a good impression.
5. Have your own personal style
Are you a classy guy with button-down shirts and thin ties? Are you crunchy granola with longer hair, earth-toned and tie-dye clothes? Or are you ruder with bright colors and some hip-hop swag? Whatever your taste is, find it and own it. Girls notice when you have a confident style thing going on.@@Carhartt?@@ @@Also, Rebecca had WAY too much fun writing this last graph?@@
