Over the weekend, I went on a “girls weekend.” And it’s exactly what you think it is. Eleven of us separated in two vehicles went on an eight-hour road trip up north to Washington. Even though we spent most of the trip in the car, it was anything but boring.
First of all, when girls get in a car the volume gets turned up to its maximum output. The actual volume of the radio gets turned up as high as it can go, then the volume of the voices in the car gets turned up. So you have girls shouting over each other and on top of the music playing and pretty soon those shouts turn to raspy smoker voices.
Speaking of talking … We talk a lot. We talk about things like food, other people, food, school, food, other drivers, food, and Taylor Swift. Girls have two basic loves: food and talking. I think the only quiet time we had on the whole trip was when one fell asleep, one was driving, one was reading, and one was doing homework. Other than that, the music and conversation were on the entire time.
We listened to all kinds of music, but mostly to Adele. Who we all think we can sing like. We belt the high notes, “never mind I’ll find someone like youuuuuuuuu,” and sing the low notes “guess she gave you things I didn’t give to youuuuuuu,” *sad face looking out the window reminiscing about a past lover*. Then we get depressed and have to eat.
We ate most of the ride there and most of the ride back. Not once were we ever without Skittles, Goldfish, or Juanita’s chips. And damn can ladies put it away! I still am amazed that women don’t win more eating contests. But more amazed am I by the rude stereotype that women can’t drive.
Which is sometimes true. We can drive just fine; it’s getting the car to function that is the problem. The Toyota Prius we were driving served as a real pain in the ass for most of the time. First off, we couldn’t get the damn thing to turn on. Who puts a power button on a car?! Then there’s this weird flat box looking key that goes into a slot. Then you have to push the power button. BUT you have to have your foot on the break in order to start it. UGH.
Then it was hotter than eff this weekend so of course we needed the air conditioning. However, the lovely Prius comes with a touch screen so you have to navigate through the whole thing in order to find the air. Cars should be simple, like watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Overall, the weekend was a success. We learned to drive the Prius, sung our hearts out to Adele, ate our body weight in leftover Easter candy, and even got a little sun in. I wouldn’t trade being a girl for anything in the world, but I would change how to turn on a Toyota Prius.
