ASUO President Laura Hinman and Vice President Nick McCain took office Friday and have begun appointing people to their cabinet and preparing for their year in office. @@http://asuo.uoregon.edu/senate.php?a=30@@ @@http://rha.uoregon.edu/committees/executive-board/nick-mccain/@@
So far, Hinman and McCain have appointed Jena Langham to chief of staff and Greg Mills to finance director. They will fill the rest throughout the week. @@http://uoregon.edu/findpeople/person/Jena*Langham@@ @@http://uoregon.edu/findpeople/person/Greg*Mills@@
A position that is new to the ASUO Executive is the athletics commissioner. This spot has been filled by former ASUO Sen. Katherine DuPont, who will act as the ASUO liaison to all athletic programs and groups on campus.
“I will work to revise the distribution method, implement in a points-reward system and create a plan to expand the current student section,” DuPont said. “My biggest task will be in creating and rebuilding trust in the ASUO with all sports related entities, including the fans.”
For next year, DuPont is most excited to build relationships with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Pit Crew. DuPont is also looking forward to improving the current relationship ASUO has with Club Sports. @@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=3641286@@
One thing McCain is excited about is the personal relations and media coordinator positions. He thinks they will help improve communication within the ASUO.
“We want to work at being very open,” McCain said. “These positions will help us be more successful with that.”
Another thing he is excited to get his hands on is the ASUO website. McCain explained that the search engine doesn’t work very well, and it can be nearly impossible to find things.@@sounds familiar@@
“If someone didn’t know that the Constitution was a part of the Green Tape Notebook, it would be very difficult to find,” he said.
A new position that McCain thinks shows promise is the academic affairs coordinator. This person will work closely with academic senators, and the University Career Center. He hopes this will show the Executive’s commitment to academics and to inform students about some of the services the Career Center provides.
However, the Executive is most excited about the Leadership Academy. This is a training program for people who are interested in being a part of the ASUO but do not have any experience.
The class will include learning pods that will be made up of an Executive member, an intern and hopefully a senator. Through these pods, interns will be able to get a taste of different parts of the ASUO.
“This class is reflective, and allows each student to grow as a student leader,” McCain said. “I hope that people will feel as if they have developed as individuals.”
