Pouring out a referendum for the lost homie
There are many sides to the Richard Lariviere-ouster opposition. But most everyone involved in this issue on this side of Albany are particularly upset with the way that the Oregon University System chose to go about getting rid of our president, even if they disagreed with the man. As we discussed at the time, it was a nontransparent way of going about firing a public officer that affects us daily.@@daily? really?@@ That is why we support an effort mentioned in ASUO Senate last Wednesday to put up a ballot measure asking students what they think about the decision to fire Lariviere. It has been several months since the decision was made, and this student vote will never change what happened, but such a referendum has an opportunity to establish the student’s voice in a tangible way.
Here’s to you, Garrett Sim
It’s only fitting that this year’s second Civil War basketball game was dominated by an Oregonian with roots at both schools. Garrett Sim, a Beaver before college, happened to be recruited more heavily (and actually offered a scholarship) by the Ducks. To watch his growth from freshman year to now, it’s cool to see a homegrown prospect turn into a sharp-shooting D-I starter. It’s hard to say exactly when Sim stopped being that guy you thought couldn’t play college ball@@eh?@@ and turned into that guy you want holding the ball on every possession — but when it did, it really did. The booing from Beaver fans on Sunday as he drained shot after shot only made his last Civil War that much better and was a sweet sound to ring in his thousandth point.

University football facing potential NCAA sanctions
The yearlong athletics nightmare continues. We’re not exactly sure what the University’s athletic document dump is particularly apropos of, but as Rob Moseley of The Register-Guard analyzed, it’s “impossible to draw conclusions about the ultimate severity of the charges, and punishments, Oregon might face.” The important part is that anyone supporting Oregon’s football program has been put through the wringer for nearly a year as the occasional report comes out about potential allegations concerning our work with Will Lyles.@@http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2011/07/oregon-will-lyles-ncaa-investigation-yahoo-sports/1#.T0wwMsxqMnU@@ And much like the ubiquitous cranes in Eugene lately, these stories have just stuck around, continuing to roll out every so often and giving us solid, unrelenting dread.@@aww…poor football team@@
