Woman tries to save dogs and herself from house fire
After a neighbor warned a woman who was staying at a Santa Clara home of smoke coming out of the garage, the woman tried to run inside to save the owner’s dogs before getting out herself. The dogs managed to escape, but she was nearly overcome by the smoke and was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend by ambulance.
Three different fire departments were called to the scene — Santa Clara, Lane Rural and Eugene — and it took them 30 minutes to put out the fire. The owners of the house returned home about halfway into the process, and were reunited with their dogs and later the women who was staying in their home.
The estimated damage for the house is $100,000, while the contents could be between $50,000 to $75,000.
18-year-old advocate sentenced to 75 months in prison
Springfield man Brandon Chambers plead guilty on Friday to three counts of first-degree sexual abuse and a charge of online sexual corruption of a child. He was sentenced to the mandatory minimum of 75 months on Monday after refusing to make any statement apologizing for his actions.
Chambers flew to Washington D.C. last spring to be given the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his advocacy and volunteerism on behalf of youth with mental health issues. Back in November, Eugene Police arrested him after he was accused of sexually abusing two 12-year-old girls. He sent sexually explicit Facebook messages to one girl, and with both the abuse consisted of “improper sexual touching,” according to the Register Guard.
Springfield man sentenced on kidnapping and assault charges
Jared Youngblood plead guilty and was sentenced Monday for seven and a half years in prison for his part in an Oct. 8 kidnapping of a Marcola man. Youngblood and his co-defendants believed the man had interfered with their marijuana grow, but mistook him for another person.
Youngblood and his co-defendants abducted, bound, gagged and temporarily left the Marcola man tied to a tree in a remote area near Shotgun Park. They later took him to a Marcola residence, where the man escaped and flagged down a motorist.
It was later discovered that one of the members of the initial “grow” project was the one who had harvested the marijuana and hid it from the other members.
Man posed as police officer for years
Eugene police officers arrested Daniel Alloway, 39, last Thursday on criminal impersonation charges, with coercion and menacing charges added on Tuesday. Alloway responded to various calls, including domestic disputes where he brandished his weapon.
Alloway also went to schools and made presentations where he gave out teddy bears to children while posing as an officer. He had clothing that resembled Eugene Police Officer uniforms. He also is suspected of using an SUV and stopping cars as a police officer. He even displayed a realistic badge at one incident.
EPD discovered Alloway was posing as an officer when they started getting calls and patrons asking for “Officer Dan Baker,” which is not the name of any current officers.
Police are hoping Alloway will stay in custody at the Lane County Jail until his case is resolved.
