Two city sailboats stolen from Public Works Department
Two of the city’s sailboats used for youth lessons were stolen from the Public Works Department’s fleet services yard last week.
The thieves left behind parts of the boats, such as their rudders and centerboards, but stole parts from another boat. The stolen boats were valued at $12,400.
They were found Wednesday afternoon at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Glennwood. They were left in a boat trailer that did not belong to the city. A man spotted the boats while walking past the cemetery in the morning. He recognized the stolen boats, prompting him to call police.
Metal thieves hit preschool
West Eugene has been plagued by metal thieves, who most recently hit a Head Start and a library. The thieves broke off a large water spigot which resulted in a ruptured water pipe that runs through the center.
More than 400 gallons of water flooded the building, forcing them to cancel classes for at least the rest of the week. The damage is expected to cost more than $50,000.
A number of businesses in the West Eugene area have been hit by similar burglaries lately. The thieves have been stealing outdoor water valves and fixtures with mostly brass and copper parts.
Jury voted 11-1 against Swartout
In an interview with the Register-Guard, a juror came forward saying that there was only one person who would not vote that Angelica Swartout was guilty of killer her newborn baby.
The juror told the Guard that the undecided juror did not vocalized any specific reason for being unable to convict Swartout. However, without a unanimous jury, Swartout could not be convicted.
Due to the disagreement of the jury, the judge was forced to call a mistrial. Swartout has and will be in the Lane County Jail until she has new trial.
15 pounds of pot seized outside Cottage Grove
Two men were arrested on I-5 just outside of Cottage Grove Tuesday morning when Oregon State Police found them with 15 pounds of marijuana.
Frank Konsewicz, 21, and Keith T. Carpentier, 39, were traveling on I-5 at 8:44 a.m. when a state trooper stopped them for unspecified traffic violations.
After a canine unit was called to the scene, 15 pounds of marijuana and six ounces of hashish were found inside a large box hidden in the vehicle. It was an estimated seizure of $37,500 worth of marijuana.
