Volunteers from Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group began Energy Education week Monday by visiting classrooms and after school programs in an effort to educate 700 children about energy efficiency and conservation, according to an OSPIRG press release.
“Teachers are really excited to have us come,” said Helena Schlegel, OSPIRG’s energy education training coordinator. “The kids have a lot of fun and really learn a lot from the presentations.”
Lesson plans are developed by the U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Week is part of OSPIRG’s goal to inspire long-term change within the community in response to a rise in energy consumption that is attributed to population growth and the scheduled closing of the Boardman Coal Plant in 2020.
