Parking rates rise
For the first time since 1999 the City of Eugene is raising city-wide parking rates. The hourly cost, starting today, will raise to $1 from 75 cents.
On Oct. 15, parking garages across Eugene will increase their daily rates more than 70 percent from $3.50 to $6. These increases will allow the city to use parking revenue to pay for non-parking issues, according to The Register-Guard.
New Democratic campaign office opens in Eugene
On Sunday, local Democrat supporters gathered at the new campaign office in downtown Eugene to listen to U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio talk about this year’s presidential candidates.
According to KEZI, the new downtown office is owned by the state-based group Organizing for America, which is committed to re-electing President Barack Obama.
The office is located near West 6th Avenue and Olive Street.
Springfield family hosting fundraiser to adopt a special needs child
A Springfield family is planning to adopt a special needs child from Bulgaria after learning how poorly children with special needs are often treated in Eastern Europe, KMTR reported.
The family has already adopted four special-needs children through the state, on top of having three children of their own.
Including travel costs, the adoption could cost the family $25,000. Future fundraisers are being planned with hopes to lower the cost of adoption.
11-year-old girl falls out of bus window and dies
An 11-year-old girl died in Portland after falling out of a party bus window Saturday night. Her family and friends were in the bus celebrating a quinceanera,@@Enya or no?@@ the Latino equivalent of a sweet 16. @@http://www.merriam-webster.com/spanish/quincea%C3%B1ero@@
As the bus took a corner, the girl leaned up against an emergency exit and it opened, allowing the girl to fall out.
According to KVAL, Portland police are investigating how the emergency exit door was opened because they are designed to be secure and locked.
Eugene man dies in motorcycle crash near Corvallis
A Eugene man died in a crash on Highway 99 West between Monroe and Corvallis Sunday afternoon.
Kenneth Douglas Carroll, 72, was traveling north when he collided with an out-of-control van traveling south.
The van’s driver, a 28-year-old Corvallis resident, lost control and crossed into the northbound lane before crashing into Carroll’s motorcycle, according to The Register- Guard.
