This week in higher education news:
On Jan. 16, the Oregon Education Investment Board (OEIB) has put out a job listing in the Chronicle of Higher Education for a chief education officer. The OEIB was created in December 2011 when Gov. John Kitzhaber signed Oregon Senate bill 909, outlining the establishment of the 13-member board. Kitzhaber strongly advocated for the creation of such a board as part of his goal to reform public education in Oregon. The posting says the OEIB is seeking someone to lead the transformation of Oregon’s public education system from early childhood through high school and college. According to the posting, the Chief Education Officer will serve as the OEIB’s chief executive in the creation, implementation and management of an integrated public education system.
A report came out yesterday in the New York Times on what the top 1 percent of earners majored in while in college. The report found that degrees in pre-med, economics, biochemistry, zoology and biology are the most common.
According to an article in the chronicle of Higher Education, the NCAA is getting closer to approving multi-year scholarships plus $2,000 in spending money for athletes by tweaking and reaffirming the measures set forth back in October. This would mean that athletes could receive larger scholarships for longer amounts of time. The article said that the NCAA board will likely approve these two items at a meeting in April.
