Oregon (11-9, 3-5 Pac-12 Conference) won its first road game of the season on Saturday afternoon, topping UCLA (8-10, 3-4 Pac-12) 83-62 at the John Wooden Center in Los Angeles. Oregon took a commanding 31-point lead early in the second half on the strength of 27 second-chance points on 23 offensive rebounds. Senior forward Jasmin Holliday, a Chino Hills, Calif., native, recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds in her homecoming trip. Holliday was 3 of 5 from three-point range and 8 of 13 from the field overall and posted her seventh career double-double. She also added three assists and three blocks in a dominant performance on both ends.
Three other players reached double-figures for the Ducks, including freshman Liz Brenner, who had her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ariel Thomas had 11 points and sophomore Danielle Love tied her career-high with 16, including four three-pointers. Senior Nia Jackson also dished a season-high seven assists in the win.
UCLA was led by Rebekah Gardner, a high school teammate of Holliday, who racked up 22 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort. For head coach Paul Westhead, it was his first win against UCLA as the Oregon women’s basketball coach, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Bruins.
Oregon held a comfortable 77-53 lead with 3:58 to play, but UCLA utilized full-court pressure to ignite a 9-0 run to close within 77-62 with 1:58 left in the game. The Bruins outscored the Ducks 39-31 in the second half, but shot a dismal 30.4 percent (24 of 79) and committed 15 turnovers.
The Ducks came out scorching, shooting 47.6 percent (20 of 42) from the floor in the first half. At the intermission, the Ducks outscored UCLA 22-10 in the paint, scored 15 points off the Bruins’ nine first-half turnovers and added 20 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds. Holliday was one rebound short of a first-half double-double with 15 points and nine boards, while Brenner added 11 points and eight boards – including two three-point plays, before halftime. Jackson had five first half assists and three steals.
