Oregon released promising data this week regarding unemployment, stating that the jobless rate has dropped to 8.9 percent, the lowest figure in three years. This rate is still above the national average of 8.5 percent, and some economists are still wary of this slow progress, pointing out problems in the new numbers coming out.
Various state agencies are seeking approval to fill more than 1,200 positions. Departments that have seen increases include fire departments and the transportation department.
Lane County Commissioner Rob Handy officially launched his bid for reelection this week. He currently represents north Eugene. There will be a three-way contest in the upcoming election as Handy faces challengers from two members of city council: Pat Farr and Mike Clark.
Oregon counties are hurting from the lack of timber revenue. Much of the revenue the state receives from timber goes toward rebuilding roads. Money going to counties because of logging has significantly dropped in the last 20 years because the timber industry is not thriving as it once was.
