This week in higher education news:
Recyclemania, the national collegiate competition that promotes waste reduction and encourages campus communities to adopt healthy recycling habits, began this past Sunday, Jan. 22. It runs until March 31. The University takes this opportunity to enter into competition with Oregon State University in yet another civil war rivalry. The universities have competed the past two years in the Per Capita Classic, where the universities report a weekly per capita of recyclables collected. At the end of 10 weeks, the weekly per capita totals are added together, and the school with the highest cumulative weekly average wins.
The state of Oregon will be receiving a $200,000 grant to go toward preparing students for college. Oregon is one of ten states to receive one of these grants from Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisers to promote long-term collaboration between K-12 and 2- and 4- year post secondary institutions within each state. If Oregon meets the grants goals, there is the potential to receive as much as $600,000 over 3 years.
