Ashton Eaton has been all the buzz around Tracktown for some time now, heck the guy even has a twitter hashtag. On Friday, Eaton continued to make his mark on an already spellbound crowd at Hayward Field by first setting the decathlon 100-meter dash world record (10.21) and following it up with another world record breaking jump of 8.23-meters giving him 2,164 points, the most ever after two events. After the days five events, Eaton currently stands in first place at 4,728 points, which puts him on pace to break the American record.
Those who stuck out the long and rainy day at Hayward were rewarded with a dominant performance by Galen Rupp in the men’s 10,000-meter race and an exciting finish in the women’s. Rupp, an Oregon native and former University of Oregon Duck, set an Olympic trials record with a time of 27:25.33 and will lead the way to London. In an exciting finish, the women’s 10,000 meter champion Amy Hastings was able to pull away from the pack in the last 200 meters to be crowned champion.
More excitement coming on Saturday with the conclusion of the decathlon and the women’s 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles finals in the evening. For now, here are a few selects from yesterday.
