The Oregon softball team picked up a pair of wins Wednesday in its doubleheader with Portland State at Erv Lind Stadium.
Oregon (28-19) kicked off the afternoon with the second straight complete game by pitcher Brittany Rumfelt in a 2-1 win. The Ducks closed out the afternoon with a 7-1 win.
The Ducks earned the win in the opener with timely and quality hitting, and found their offensive touch in game two.
Rumfelt, following up her three-hitter against Stanford, had her fifth complete game of the season as she struck out two and walked none. She gave up six hits and an earned run.
Oregon received hits from five batters, including Neena Bryant, Joanna Gail, Lovena Chaput, Kayleen Hudson and two from Monique Fuiava.
Chaput’s lone hit came on a triple down the right field line in the fourth inning. It marked her first three-base hit of the year and 10th of her career. Gail had made it on base through a fielder’s choice and scored on Chaput’s hit for a 1-0 Oregon lead.
Hudson came up next and singled in Chaput for a 2-0 edge.
Portland State scored its only run in the sixth inning. Jackie Heide was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch, respectively. Brandi Scoggins brought Heide home with a double to left field.
Vikings pitcher Mandy Hill also pitched a complete game and allowed six hits. She gave up the two earned runs and had a strikeout.
The second game featured a late offensive flourish with all seven of the Ducks’ runs coming in the seventh inning.
Gail and catcher Ashley Kivett led the offense with three hits apiece. Chaput, Hudson and Cortney Kivett each had two hits.
Ashley Kivett started the seventh with a single into center and Sari-Jane Jenkins singled to left field. Cortney Kivett singled and set up a bases-loaded situation for Neena Bryant.
Bryant went to bat and singled, allowing Jenkins and Ashley Kivett to score and Cortney Kivett to reach third. Bryant next stole second and after Fuiava struck out, Gail singled to left field, scoring Cortney Kivett from third.
Later in the inning Carlyn Re brought in Hannah Barril, who pinch ran for Chaput, and Gail with a single to center field.
Oregon had 15 hits on the afternoon.
On the mound, the Ducks used a combination of Melissa Rice and Alicia Cook. Rice pitched three innings of four-hit ball, while allowing one unearned run and making two strikeouts. Cook came on and in three innings had seven strikeouts.
By the time it was over, Oregon had earned its second straight win and could look ahead to its two games in the Civil War series this weekend. Oregon plays Oregon State on Friday in Corvallis at 4 p.m. and visits the Beavers again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
