Nik Antovich’s article (“McCain at the Forefront of our Failing Politicians,” ODE May 19) shows off an outrageous amount of ignorance and political bias. His attacks on Sen. John McCain are unwarranted and detached from reality. For example, the article claims “[McCain’s] bipartisanship is really just a euphemism for a failure to successfully negotiate the passage of certain bills,” which makes the reader question how it’s possible that Antovich has no knowledge of the McCain-Feingold Bill, one of the most significant pieces of bipartisan legislation in recent memory.
Moreover, Nik’s petty attempt to shift blame for the Iraq War from the Bush Administration to Sen. McCain reveals Antovich’s real goal: to defend the extreme right wing of the Republican Party from reasonable moderates like McCain who would unite this country instead of dividing it. We all realize that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake, but it is nevertheless our
responsibility to repair the damage done by President Bush and create stability in that country, and to do so we need an experienced leader who will face this challenge without resorting to Nik Antovich’s cowardly “cut and run” strategy. As much as Nik would love to re-elect Bush to a third term, this country needs a new leader who understands the realities of war and who isn’t afraid to work with Democrats to get things accomplished.
