I was appalled by the Emerald’s guest commentary last Thursday (“VFSA deserved its original increase,” ODE, Feb. 21). The language that was used (by ASUO Sen. Diego Hernandez) to depict PFC Chairman Jacob Brennan was not only vulgar but also completely inaccurate. Terms such as racist, sexist and homophobic are not something that should be thrown around lightly, especially by a senator who represents the student body. Depicting a fellow ASUO member in such a light shows little of the senator’s own character and sense of camaraderie. I personally can attest that Brennan has none of these characteristics. I consider myself a strong female, who most would characterize as a feminist. Brennan has never expressed any sexist feelings and I would argue that he has been the reverse, an advocate. I am disappointed that the Emerald even entertained the idea of publishing the commentary. It is stories like this that defaces the ASUO government’s reputation.
