Partisan politics drove me to become an independent voter. Our strong two-party system has built walls between us. With no allegiance to a party, I’m evaluating presidential candidates differently. I want to support someone who focuses on the issues that can unite us, not those that divide us.
I believe Barack Obama is that person. He’s more focused on people and their families than he is on political rhetoric. He’s connected with average people and the issues they face in their daily lives. He’s willing to include others regardless of labels they’ve willingly accepted or those that have been thrust on them. He’s a leader this country can rally around.
Obama represents opportunity. He realizes the constraints of partisanship. He wants to lead us to a place where we can once again work together to improve our country and provide opportunities for all Americans to enjoy success.
Obama has conducted himself in a civil manner throughout the primaries. He shows his respect for various ideas and his ability to meld them together for the greater common good. He has my support.
I would like to vote for him, but in Oregon voters who do not align with a party cannot vote for party candidates in the primary. That doesn’t mean I can’t urge others to support a person who provides hope and a positive approach to politics. He sees light at the end of the tunnel and will work hard to make sure we all get through that tunnel.
