Oregon women’s golf head coach Shannon Rouillard will be reassigned to another position in the University of Oregon’s athletic department, according to published reports, after she and her team were notified last week that she would be relieved of her coaching duties.
The University stated in a press release that the move related “strictly to the overall long-term success and direction of the program.”
“The University is not aware of any major NCAA or Pac-10 violations,” it went on to say.
Rouillard’s contract will not be renewed when it expires on June 30, 2009.
The release announced assistant coach Meredith Jones will take over the team in the interim. Jones, 25, was a former player at Baylor and Arizona State, and is in her second year as an assistant coach.
Rouillard, 36, has been the women’s golf coach since 2000, and the Ducks are currently ranked No. 27 in the nation. Rouillard had taken the Ducks to four NCAA regional appearances since she began coaching, and her official athletic department biography called her job in 2000-01 “masterful” after Oregon fell seven shots short of the NCAAs.
Last season, Oregon competed in its fifth postseason with Rouillard as coach, finishing 13th at the West Regional.
Rouillard golfed for Oregon from 1990-95, initially as a walk-on who eventually captained her team as a senior, coached by Renee Baumgartner, currently executive senior associate athletic director. Baumgartner informed the team of Rouillard’s dismissal last week, according to The Register-Guard newspaper.
As a senior, Rouillard finished 29th at the NCAA championships and Oregon finished in fourth place at the regional tournament, its highest finish ever.
