Peace march to be
held on Sunday
Following the lead of people in New York who have been planning anti-war activities since Sept. 11, students and community members are taking a local approach as part of a national day of action for peace.
They will participate in a march and rally on Sunday, Oct. 7, supported by the National Coalition for Peace and Justice at the EMU Amphitheater from 2 to 4 p.m.
Randy Newnham, from the University’s Survival Center, said he hopes the event will create dialogue and discourage “scapegoating of people in the community.”
“Rallies are nice, but they’re not effective in creating social change,” he said. “People need to get their feet wet and get engaged in politics on a personal level. Society doesn’t change until we change as individuals.”
The event is being organized by the Survival Center and the Justice Not War Coalition. Local performing artists at the event will include The Sugar Beets, Jordan Blumberg-Enge and the Urgent Carnival, a local street theater and musical group.

Oregonians to travel
to New York
To affirm the economic link between Oregon and New York, encourage travel and stimulate New York’s economy, Oregon residents will be taking a trip across the country.
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., honored the organizers and participants in the upcoming “Flight for Freedom” on the U.S. Senate floor Thursday.
“In a show of solidarity with their fellow Americans, more than 700 Oregonians are making a statement to the nation this weekend by heading to the hotels, Broadway shows and restaurants in New York City that are fighting for economic survival in the aftermath of the attacks,” Wyden said in a statement.
Oregon business and civic leaders will be joined on their trip to New York City by State Treasurer Randall Edwards.
“This is a great opportunity for Oregonians to make a personal connection with the people of New York and show our support for those suffering the most from this terrible tragedy,” Edwards said in a statement.
