The Oregon men’s golf team had a solid day Tuesday, fighting back to fifth in the final round of the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash.
The Ducks sat in seventh place after the first 36 holes played at the 7,035-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain on Monday, but shot 375 on Tuesday to finish in the upper half of the 10 teams.
The team’s final score of 1,122 was enough to defeat Oregon State at 1,130 as well as Colorado, who both were ahead of Oregon after the first day.
Washington, who had a solid lead after day one, continued to be strong to capture win at 1,099. Not far behind, Washington State finished at 1,106, followed by Nevada at 1,109 and Pepperdine, the defending champion, at 1,113.
“We did not have a very good tournament,” Oregon coach Steve Nosler said. “We saved a little face by passing a few people (Tuesday), but overall, I’m not happy with how we played.”
Washington’s Gordy Scutt, who sat in second after the first two rounds, took the individual title with a 2-under 70 Tuesday. Scutt’s teammate John Robertson didn’t fare so well in the final round with a 79 , causing him to lose his three-stroke lead from Monday. Robertson finished in a tie for fifth. Sprague Kolp of Nevada shot a final round of 67 to tie the course record and with California’s Peter Tomasulo, both of whom finished in second.
In Oregon individual standings, junior John Ellis held on for fourth place after his 1-over 73 Tuesday to leave him at a respectable even par for the tournament. Senior Aaron Byers had a solid final round Tuesday with a 1-under 71 to give him a tie for fifth, after finishing in a tie for 12th from Monday’s play .
“John and I played pretty well, but it’s a bad feeling because we’re in it for the team,” Byers said. “As a team, we were never able to put five scores together.
“I think we got caught off-guard a little bit by the golf course. It’s very difficult and the green are tough. But that’s not an excuse. We know that we can put some good scores together, we just didn’t do it this week.”
With the season still early, Oregon has plenty of time to put good scores together as it has its next chance Monday at the Pepperdine Intercollegiate in Oxnard, Calif.
