Because there hasn’t been much in the news to write about for the last few days, I thought I’d explain exactly why I’m not a Democrat. Of course, I understand that the Republican Party has problems of its own, but I think that the Democrats have much less going for them than the GOP.
Without any further ado, here it is. To be a Democrat, you have to –
– be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand. Why is it that Democrats give women the choice to kill a child for something it didn’t do, but allow someone who’s actually committed a crime to live out the rest of his or her life? Republicans, on the other hand, believe that an innocent child should be afforded more rights than someone who has actually broken a law.
– believe that businesses create oppression and governments create prosperity. I won’t even dignify this one with a response, except to say that it’s worked so well for China and Russia. Republicans, on the other hand, like to get government out of their lives instead of allowing Big Brother to micro-manage them to death. President Ronald Reagan said it best: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’”
– believe that gender roles are artificial but being homosexual is natural. What is so wrong with admitting that men and women are different? I’m glad I don’t want to spend my day off from work hunting for parts in a junkyard. I’m also happy to admit that men are stronger than I am. After all, I can cook, drive without getting lost and balance a checkbook. Is being homosexual natural? I don’t know, but saying that gender roles are artificial but homosexuality is not is ridiculous.
– believe that self-esteem is more important than actually doing something to earn it. Maybe I was an odd kid growing up, but I didn’t want a gold star for effort. I wanted to be the best, and I wanted everyone else to know it. Is that horrible? Probably. But what are we doing to children by teaching them that making an effort is just as good as actually succeeding? We’re only going to make it that much harder for them to go to college and hold a job.
– believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial quotas and set-asides are not. I don’t understand why Democrats believe that “helping” racial minorities isn’t racist. I’m part-Native American but I haven’t applied for government handouts because I don’t think that simply being Native American entitles me to a grant. If I get money for college, I want to earn it either through a job or by getting good grades. Quotas and handouts are insulting – they imply that minorities aren’t good enough on their own to earn their own way.
– believe that the only reason socialism hasn’t worked anywhere it’s been tried is because the right people haven’t been in charge. Of course, this is hinged on the idea that man is basically good, which we are not. Socialism, like every other system, will attract corrupt people. Our system works because if someone does something we don’t like, we vote them out. Socialism doesn’t work because when the leaders don’t act according to their nation’s best interest, they murder their critics (remember Tiananmen Square and Stalin’s gulags?). Perhaps socialism’s proponents haven’t heard “power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely.” The less power the government has, the better.
– believe that parades displaying racism should be legal but a manger at Christmas time should not. The reasoning for why mangers are usually outlawed is that they either violate the separation of church and state or have offended someone. Does a neo-Nazi parade offend me? Of course it does, but I’m not going to demand that those people shouldn’t have a right to assemble. I actually understand that free speech is not exclusive to politically correct groups. People today are too sensitive; if a Christian image offends you, live with it. Life is too short to be upset by everything.
– believe that success is wrong and should be taxed accordingly. Perhaps Democrats don’t think of it quite like that, but it’s the truth. Before Ronald Reagan became president, the highest tax bracket was around 70 percent. The idea that people believed that the government had a right to take 70 percent of a person’s wages is mind boggling. Even today, the Democrats want to roll back Bush’s tax cuts to fund government handouts. My advice? Learn to spend less on frivolous projects and focus more on the important things like defense and education.
– believe that the terrorists would stop trying to hurt us if we’d just pack up and hide inside our borders. I know some hate to admit it, but there are people in the world that don’t like us. Is our foreign policy perfect? No. But radical Muslims hate us for our lifestyle, not just because we’re in Iraq. Laying down our arms and singing “kumbaya” won’t help.
