The formal hearings board, one of the few entities on campus that can suspend or expel a student for violations of the Student Conduct Code, is now accepting applications for interested students.
The board is composed of faculty and students selected every year from a pool of applicants. The deadline for this year’s applications is Friday. Applications can be submitted to the Office of Judicial Affairs in 164 Oregon Hall.
The formal hearing is similar to a trial, and lawyers for the accused student and the University present arguments. Unlike a legal trial, where guilt must be proved beyond reasonable doubt, a formal hearing board needs 51 percent majority to find a student guilty.
The code is currently being revised by an ad hoc committee of the University Senate , and if the revisions pass the Senate vote May 10, the structure of formal hearings next year will change. However, a board comprising University faculty and students will still hear and decide code violations.
