Andy Lunday, left, and David Kurushima, co-directors of the Survival Center, work on sophomore Kate Spangler’s bike as part of the Survival Center’s Bicycle Appreciation Day. Spangler was getting her brakes fixed, “which are really shitty, and it looks like it may continue being really shitty because I’ve been here for 30 minutes,” she said. It turns out her bike needed some extra brake cable housing, and Spangler went to Blue Heron Bicycles to buy the parts. According to Kurushima, they have limited parts available that were left over from bikes that he and his roommates built. “We’re usually here to do minor repairs,” he said. “This has actually been a quiet day. On some days, we’ve fixed about 100 bicycles.” He said that they try to hold the event on the last Wednesday of every month.
