Music
Highlighting the week’s worth of culture is jazz pianist and University music professor Toby Koenigsberg’s Faculty Artist Series recital tonight at 8 in Beall Hall. Koenigsberg, with his penchant for translating songs by such music notables as Elliott Smith and John Coltrane into jazz piano renditions, has performed across the country with the Toby Koenigsberg Trio. Tickets are $8 for students, $10 general admission.
On Sunday, voice majors and pianists at the School of Music will perform a wide variety of German lieder in a “Poetry in Song” recital at 7:30 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall, according to a music school news release. Admission is free.
The school will host its biennial Music Today Festival, which celebrates 20th and 21st century music. November’s festival is the first of two mini-festivals titled “Contemporary Crossroads.” The sequel will run in January. The centerpiece of the November festival is a tribute on Saturday to the life and work of one of the great living choral composers, Veljo
Tormis, who will be a composer-in-residence during the festival, according to a news release.
The festival will feature a variety of programs throughout the week that have varying ticket prices. For more information, go to music.uoregon.edu and select “Music Today Festival” link in the coming events section.
