The Oregon men’s tennis team inked its first recruit for the 2007 season on Tuesday when Doug Mayeda signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Ducks next season.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have Doug joining the team,” Director of Tennis Nils Schyllander said. “He is an extremely hard worker whose aggressiveness will make him a very good Pac-10 tennis player, especially with as much indoor tennis as we play.”
Mayeda was the Colorado 5A state champion in 2005 and he reached the finals of the state tournament again this year, but fell 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to Jordan Bridge of Grand Junction High School.
Mayeda is a product of Colorado’s Cherry Creek High School, which Sports Illustrated named as the fifth best high school athletic program in the nation in 2005.
Cherry Creek has captured 33 of the last 35 state titles, and has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the most dominant tennis programs in recent Colorado history.
Mayeda was named a high school All-American athlete by the National Tennis All-American Foundation this year. He has also played in the United States Junior Davis Cup Championships for each of the past two years.
“This is a big step in creating what we hope will be a top-tier tennis team,” Schyllander said.
