The Oregon men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up their fall seasons at the Duck Classic held in Eugene Nov. 10-12.
Oregon sophomore Carmen Seremeta was the victor in the first flight of women’s singles with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 win over Kim Jochimsen of Boise State.
The women’s team enjoyed a solid weekend overall. In addition to Seremeta, senior Monica Hoz de Vila advanced to the finals of the second flight of singles and made an appearance in the doubles title match with her partner Ana Cecilia Olivos.
“It was great to see that two of the girls that have worked the hardest in the offseason had the most success,” coach Paul Reber said.
On the men’s side, the doubles team of sophomores Gustavo Loza and Mike Myrhed earned a berth in the finals, but fell at the hands of the number-one seeded duo of Miles Bugby and Johnny Parkes from New Mexico State by a count of 8-3.
“The doubles team played pretty good tennis today against a very good opponent,” director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. “It was a phenomenal run for those guys and it really bodes well for the upcoming season and the future of Oregon tennis.”
The women’s squad encountered a setback before the tournament even began when 27th-ranked Dominika Dieskova withdrew from the competition, citing an unspecified injury.
The other members filled the void created by her absence. All three of Oregon’s doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals. Hoz de Vila and Olivos were the only Ducks to advance to the final four, dispatching a team from Eastern Washington University 8-4.
After a victory by the same score in the semifinals, the duo ran into a buzzsaw in the championship match, losing to Boise State 8-2. After shaking off a tough three-set loss in the second round of the first flight singles, Hoz de Vila blitzed through flight two, losing only nine games in the three matches leading up to the final. The run came to an end after losing the first set of the final in a tiebreaker 7-6 and the second set 6-4.
Seremeta also cruised in her first match in flight one, putting the infamous “double bagel” on her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Seremeta’s first three-set match came in the semifinals. After dropping a tight first set 5-7, she roared back to take the next two comfortably, 6-1 and 6-0. The final against Jochimsen played out similarly to those last two sets with Seremeta cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 victory and the title.
“Carmen played really great tennis today and she had a great attitude throughout the entire tournament,” Reber said.
Loza and Myrhed had to put in a little more work to advance deep in the men’s doubles draw. The Oregon pair were victorious in the first two rounds after two lengthy 8-6 matches, and then had to gut out another lengthy contest, 9-7 before losing to the number one seeds from New Mexico State in the championship.
The rest of the men’s squad was successful in only three singles matches in the main draw, but the team picked up wins in seven consolation matches, six of which came against the University of Nevada.
Both teams will now take their winter breaks – the men will return to action Jan. 2 in Hawaii, and the women open the winter season at home Jan. 20.
